YAMUNANAGAR: The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) candidate Ramesh Chander Thaska was elected Zila Parishad chairman in Haryana’s Yamunanagar, with the support of three members of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Saturday.
Agni Vijay Singh, who belonged to the BSP, was elected deputy chairman of Zila Parishad.
The BSP expelled all three of its members from the party, who supported the BJP candidate.
In the house of 18 members of ZP, Yamunanagar, BJP had six seats, while BSP had four.
Three members of BSP and an independent member supported the candidature of BJP's Ramesh as chairman. Of the 18 members, 17 attended the meeting, while one of the BSP remained absent.
Ramesh bagged 10 votes while his opponent Dharampal got seven. Agni Vijay also bagged 10 votes while his opponent Gurjeet Kaur got seven.
Election officer Ayush Sinha said, "Election of chairman and deputy chairman of Zila Parishad, Yamunanagar was held on EVM. Ramesh Chander secured 10 votes”.
He said the election concluded peacefully.
The election of the chairman was earlier scheduled for December 23, but no member reached the ZP office, therefore, it was rescheduled for December 24.
The BJP district president Rajesh Sapra said, "BJP and BSP had taken a decision after which Ramesh Chander has been supported by BSP members and an Independent member. Six members of the BJP have supported the candidature of Agni Vijay Singh of BSP as deputy chairman”.
