KOLKATA: A 23-year-old clinical instructor, employed at a nursing college run by a Jadavpur-based private hospital, died on Friday morning after she fell off an app bike that she had hailed to travel from her PG accommodation in Behala to her workplace.
Mouli Adhikary, a resident of Chandipur in East Midnapore, was run over by a truck carrying reinforced concrete cement on SN Roy Road. A case pertaining to death due to negligence has been registered at the Behala police station. The truck driver was arrested.
The biker, Antony Chakraborty (40), and the pillion rider were rushed to Vidyasagar Hospital where Adhikary was declared dead. The biker was injured but his condition was stated to be out of danger.
"The woman was sitting sideways on the bike. Witnesses, including the app biker, told us that she was also carrying several items in her hand," said an officer.
Cops said that the woman had lost her balance and fallen down when the biker was trying to overtake the truck, which was moving in the same direction as the app bike. "Neither the biker nor the truck driver were speeding. But she fell off when the bike swerved. Though she was wearing a helmet, she fell under the truck's wheels and was run over. Cops are checking how the biker was riding the bike to ascertain the reason of the accident. The truck driver has been arrested," said another officer.
