GURUGRAM: The construction of a waste-to-energy plant at Bandhwari finally began on Friday in the presence of state urban local bodies minister Kamal Gupta, who was in the city for the inaugural ceremony of the project.
MCG's waste concessionaire Ecogreen Energy will set up the 25 MW waste-to-energy plant on 10 acres of land in Bandhwari. The first phase will see the building of a boundary wall and a retaining wall to stop sliding of legacy waste and to avoid any hindrance in the construction work.
In fact, the state government signed an agreement with Ecogreen for setting up the plant for solid waste management for Gurgaon and Faridabad in August 2017. And in December last year,
Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar laid its foundation stone and set December 2023 as the deadline for the project.
Now expected to be operational within two years, officials said, the plant will use state-of-the-art technology to manage solid waste via two boilers of 750 TPD capacity each and a turbo generator of 25 MW.
Emphasising on the importance of solid waste management, the ULB minister said, "This plant will prove to be a milestone for proper disposal of waste generated from both the cities of Gurgaon and Faridabad. The waste generated daily will be disposed of in this plant and 25 MW electricity will be generated daily from the waste."
On an average, both the cities generate 2100 metric tonnes of solid waste per day, which is collected by the company through door-to-door collection and transported to the landfill.
Touting this as the country's largest waste-to-energy plant, MCG officials said that it will be set up in compliance with the guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Board, State Pollution Control Board and Solid Waste Management Rules 2016.
Ecogreen officials said that the construction got delayed due to unavailability of land and late environmental clearance. "As per the direction of the nine-member committee constituted by the National Green Tribunal, we have started the construction work of the plant," said Sanjay Sharma, deputy CEO, Ecogreen.
Later in the day, Gupta visited the land identified by HSVP in Gurgaon for housing under the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana to homeless poor families identified through parivar pehchaan patra (PPP). "The survey is being done by the state government to provide the benefits of this scheme to the eligible beneficiaries."
