Bogus call centre in Sushant Lok-2 busted, 12 arrested
Gurgaon: Acting on a tip-off, tpolice busted a sham call centre on Thursday, operating from a house located in Sector-55 of Sushant Lok-2.
The police have arrested 12 people, including three women, from the sham call centre.
Police spokesperson Subhash Boken said that the team under the leadership of inspector Jasbir Singh of Cyber Crime East police station raided the call centre.
“The call centre was involved in cheating US citizens in the name of tech support. The accused used to send bulk pop-up messages to US citizens, asking them to call a toll-free number to fix their computer's problem. A call made by the victims would arrive at this call centre facility. The accused would then misguide the victim and allege the hacking of their phone or claim that a virus had affected its functioning. They would then make the victim pay anywhere between 300-500 US dollars through various payment applications. The owner of the sham call centre besides providing monthly salary and Rs 12 for single dollars earn,” police spokesperson Subhash Boken further said.
He also said that during the raid, the owner — Anil and manager —Vijay Tripathi — could not produce any property documents to run a call centre.
Police arrested 12 persons, including three women, and seized 12 laptops and one mobile from the accused. An FIR under sections 420 (cheating), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act (IT) has been registered against the accused.
