Coimbatore: The district mahila court on Thursday sentenced a 29-year-old man to seven years rigorous imprisonment for abetting the suicide of his wife in 2016. The court also sentenced his mother to one-year rigorous imprisonment for subjecting the deceased to cruelty.
R Yogeswaran of Ganapathypudur in Coimbatore city, who worked in a lathe workshop, had married
Devi, 26, of Kurichi Pirivu at Sundarapuram, in May 2016.
Devi’s parents were against the alliance initially as Yogeswaran hailed from another community. The couple were staying at Ganapathypudur with Yogeswaran’s mother R Krishnaveni, 55. As Krishnaveni used to fight with Devi, the couple shifted to another house.
Yogeswaran used to harass Devi for 5 lakh to start a business. On October 20, the couple visited Devi’s house at Kurichi Pirivu and stayed there for a day. They returned to Ganapathypudur the next day. When Yogeswaran went out to buy food, Devi, who was alone in the house, hanged herself. The Saravanampatti police registered a case under Section 174 CrPC (suspicious death). Meanwhile, Devi’s family lodged a police complaint, accusing Yogeswaran and Krishnaveni. Based on the complaint, the case was altered to Section 174 CrPC to sections 498 (A) and 306 of the Indian Penal Code. Police arrested the son-mother duo in October.
Judge R Nandhini Devi also slapped a fine of 1,500 on Yogeswaran. Krishnaveni was also slapped with a 1,000 fine.TNN
