An elevated rd from Mahipalpur to Manesar?
Gurgaon: The Union ministry of road transport and highways will explore the possibility of building an elevated road from Mahipalpur to Manesar as an upper deck of the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway.
The expressway (NH8) has among the heaviest traffic flows in Delhi-NCR and the need to decongest it has been felt for years. Since it's also the main route for traffic headed in and out of the IGI airport, both towards Gurgaon and Delhi, the need for a long-term plan has also been felt because traffic volumes will only rise through this arterial corridor.
The elevated corridor, which will be a logistical challenge to implement, is being thought of as one. Nitin Gadkari, the Union minister of road transport, has directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the elevated road keeping in mind the traffic projections for the next 25 years. The plan for an elevated road from Mahipalpur to Manesar was proposed by Union minister and Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh during a meeting with Gadkari on Tuesday, after which Gadkari directed NHAI to prepare a DPR.
“We had proposed construction of an elevated road from Dhaula Kuan or Mahipalpur to Manesar to ease traffic load on the existing expressway. Nitin Gadkari gave in-principle approval to the proposal,” Singh said.
The idea of the elevated road, however, met with resistance from officials, according to a source who was present at the meeting. But Gadkari overruled the objections and directed NHAI to prepare the DPR. The officials pointed out that there is already a flyover at Dhaula Kuan and constructing an elevated road over it may create problems with its height due to its proximity to the international airport. The elevated road’s height, if constructed over Dhaula Kuan flyover, may cause disturbance to flights at the airport, officials pointed out.
Besides, officials present in the meeting also argued that the imminent completion of the Dwarka Expressway will divert traffic from the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, automatically decongesting it . Countering this, Singh pointed that with the completion of Dwarka Expressway, residential societies of new sectors will be fully occupied, which will further increase traffic. Singh also said vehicles moving from Delhi towards Manesar and Jaipur would not take the Dwarka Expressway as it would be a long detour, but prefer to reach Manesar directly via the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway.
Gadkari said that construction of a junction at Mahipalpur is under way to connect the Dwarka Expressway with the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway. With the completion of the former, some of the traffic moving towards Gurgaon will be diverted from Mahipalpur to it. But even then, there will be heavy traffic on Delhi-Gurgaon expressway up to Manesar. So, it would be appropriate to start working on the elevated road keeping in view the traffic load for the next 25 years, the minister said in the meeting.
The DPR will be prepared with a technical evaluation of the concerns about the road’s proximity to the airport as well as possible solutions. No timeline has been set for the DPR.
