KANPUR: Jailed Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Irfan Solanki was shifted from Kanpur district jail to Maharajganj district jail on Wednesday on administrative ground. However, his brother Rizwan Solanki would remain in the Kanpur jail. Irfan and Rizwan Solanki were sent to jail on December 2 after surrendering at the camp office of the Kanpur commissioner of police in connection with an arson case.
The MLA has been accused of arson to grab a woman’s plot, air travel with fake Aadhaar card and giving certificate to a Bangladeshi citizen Rizwan Mohammad proclaiming him as an Indian.
Apart from the police convoy, some of his family members and supporters accompanied him in cars. He is supposed to reach Maharajganj by Wednesday evening.
As per authorities, Irfan, lodged in the jail in various cases, was ordered to be transferred from Kanpur district jail to the Maharajganj district jail on administrative grounds on Tuesday.
At around 10:15 am, amid the tight security, the police took Irfan to Maharajganj located some 450 km from Kanpur. He also had an argument with the policemen, who were trying to push him in the van. Irfan’s wife Naseem was present outside the jail at the time of the shifting. The MLA broke down as soon as he came across his wife.
Adequate police force has been provided to the police convoy. Besides, the police of districts dotting the highway from Kanpur to Maharjganj have also been kept on alert mode. There are five vehicles in the police convoy and as per protocol, the convoy will not stop anywhere between Kanpur and Maharajganj.
After the departure of Irfan, when his wife Naseem was questioned by media persons regarding the government decision to shift her husband to Maharajganj jail, she said, “The government is working with the intention of revenge and my husband is not at all safe.”
The UP prisons department ordered his transfer on Monday evening, soon after SP president Akhilesh Yadav met him in Kanpur jail and spent nearly 40 minutes with him.
To recall, the police had raided the residence of Irfan in Jajmau late November 8 night after he allegedly set afire the house of a woman Nazeer Fatima located in the vicinity on November 7. In the FIR, she had accused Irfan and his brother Rizwan of setting her house on fire to grab the land.
Police also registered five more FIRs which include air travel with fake Aadhaar card and giving certificate to Bangladeshi citizen Rizwan Mohammad as an Indian in the last few days.
