BSP gives up on Brahmins, SC Mishra loses power

It has been more than six months since Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Satish Chandra Mishra has been missing in action. Initially, it was said that he was not active in party affairs because of ill health but now it seems that he has been side-lined because the Bahujan Samaj Party no longer wishes to focus on upper caste, mainly Brahmins. The BSP is firmly rooting for Dalits, OBCs and Muslims, and Mishra is not required for this action plan. Mayawati has already sacked former cabinet minister Nakul Dubey and then another Brahmin leader, Anil Pandey.

US ban on 'Made in Hong Kong' label breaches trade rules: WTO

The United States is flouting international trade rules by labeling imports from Hong Kong as those from China, the World Trade Organization ruled on Wednesday, an outcome that Washington rejects. The WTO ruling addressed a decision under former president Donald Trump's administration after Beijing imposed a sweeping security law on the financial hub in 2020 to stamp out dissent. Trump retaliated by removing special trading privileges for the city and US customs authorities later said goods produced there could no longer be stamped "Made in Hong Kong", sparking the complaint. Hong Kong argued that such a move ignored its status as a separate member of the WTO, violating trade rules.

Spain votes on trans rights bill that has split the left

Lawmakers vote on Thursday on a transgender rights bill that allows anyone 16 and over to change gender on their ID card, legislation that has sparked divisions within Spain's left-wing government and its feminist movement. The draft bill effectively simplifies the procedure for changing gender on a person's national identity card, allowing them to request the change based on a simple statement. But the text has sparked a bitter dispute among activists in Spain's powerful feminist lobby and LGBTQ equality campaigners. If it passes its first reading on Thursday, the bill will move to the Senate and if left unchanged, as expected, will become law within weeks.

Hundreds of migrants bundled in coats and blankets formed a long line in cold winter air at the U.S.-Mexico border on Wednesday, hoping the Christmas period will bring an end to uncertainty over their hopes of securing asylum in the United States. Many hoped entry would be easier after a Dec. 21 deadline for the United States to lift COVID-era restrictions, but the U.S. Supreme Court this week ruled to let the policy, called Title 42, temporarily stay in place. Watching migrants trickle past gates into the United States, several Venezuelans lamented the last-minute move.

The measure would also boost U.S. defense spending by about 10% to $858 billion, addressing concerns from some lawmakers that more investment in the nation's military is needed to ensure America's security.
