Gurgaon: As many as 165 women out of 5,653 in 73 villages have cancer, a screening initiative by the health department has found.
The initiative, aimed at eliminating cancer and providing treatment to patients at the earliest, was conducted across Gurgaon from February to November this year.
The screening was carried out for cervical, oral and breast cancers. Out of the 165 patients, 138 were detected to have cervical cancer, 27 have breast cancer, nine oral cancer and one a malignant tumour in the lungs. Negligent attitude towards personal health, lack of awareness, and stigma, coupled with lack of treatment and screening initiatives, are the leading causes behind high morbidity and mortality from cancer, health officials said. tnn
