Synopsis

DMRC has been exploring avenues to provide consultancy services for metro projects across the world.

Disinvestment bound heavy equipment manufacturer BEML Ltd is in talks with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to supply rolling stock for the Bahrain metro project.

Amit Banerjee, chairman and managing director at BEML Ltd, told ET that the public sector undertaking is also expanding its offering for track maintenance gear, more efficient mining machines, and snow cutting equipment.

“A number of metro projects are being taken up globally. We are in discussion with DMRC to supply the rolling stock in the tenders they win. Bahrain metro is one place where they are seeing,” Banerjee told ET.

DMRC has been exploring avenues to provide consultancy services for metro projects across the world. The scope of work is also extending to a full engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. In addition to Bahrain, DMRC is also said to be eyeing projects in Egypt, Mauritius, Bangladesh, Israel, and Vietnam. Officials said bids for the Bahrain metro are at evaluation stage.

“Having done a metro that runs on standard gauge, we need to only upgrade ourselves with the speed. The design speed of metros in India is 90 km per hour (kmph), globally it will be around 160 kmph. That is possible and we can enter the export market,” Banerjee said.

BEML is also exploring defence procurement opportunities to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore that are expected over the coming five years. In addition to this, tenders worth Rs 18,000 crore are expected from the domestic metro projects.

“Once we increase the speed of rolling stock, the tracks need to be taken care of. We see an opportunity in the Vande Bharat trains and in track maintenance equipment,” Banerjee said. Bids for manufacture, supply, and maintenance of 200 Vande Bharat trains were opened in the last week of November. A consortium of Siemens-BEML was among the five that had bid for making these trains.

On the disinvestment of BEML he said, “the demerger has been completed. Listing is under process. Beyond that we have to wait and see”.

Banerjee also affirmed that progress with respect to the disinvestment is expected in the next fiscal.
