Tirupur: The Tirupur city municipal corporation (TCMC) on Tuesday started a campaign to sensitise residents on eradication of dumping of untreated faecal sludge in drainage or water bodies.
A corporation official said the city currently holds the open-defecation-free (ODF) tag under the Union government’s Swachh Bharat Mission. “The ODF tag means that not a single person is found defecating in the open.”
Through the present campaign, the civic body aims to get the ODF++ tag. “To get the ODF++ tag, the protocol adds a condition that faecal sludge is safely treated with zero discharge or dumping of untreated sewage in drainage, water bodies or open areas,” the official said.
A total of 14 lakh people reside in the city that spread over 159.35 sqkm. “From 2016, the civic body has built toilets for 5,932 households. It also constructed 209 community sanitary complexes for residents who did not have adequate
space in their houses to build a toilet. Based on a recent assessment, it was found that there are a total of 2,86,386 households in the 60 wards of the corporation.”
