KALYAN: Thane police suspended a traffic police officer after a video of him taking a bribe of Rs 200 from an autorickshaw driver in Kalyan went viral.
Nivrutti Menawane was posted as assistant police inspector with Kalyan (East) traffic division. Sources said Menawane had six months to retire.
The driver did not come forward but a hidden video recorded by him on Monday night showed he was caught for a minor traffic violation at Chakki naka chowk in Kalyan (East).
The video shows Menawane demanding Rs500 but when the driver said he had only Rs100, he told him to call his relative to get the money. After the driver's request, he took Rs200 and did not issued any receipt.
Kalyan Citizens' Forum (KCF) tweeted the video tagging the director-general of police (DGP) Maharashtra, Thane police and traffic police demanded action against Menawane.
Dr Vinay Kumar Rathod, DCP (traffic police), confirmed the suspension.
