Coimbatore: With Christmas just a few days away, sales of cribs and other decorations are gaining pace in the district.
R Sakthivel of Redfields at Puliakulam, said he makes 20 cribs a day. “My grandfather and father used to sell products made of bamboo. I am making ladders, baskets, cribs and window blinds using bamboo,” he told TOI. The 52-year-old man sells four types of cribs, the smallest of which is sold for 300.
Sakthivel has roped in his 27-year-old son Aravindan and two relatives to help him in his shop. “While bamboo-made cribs are affordable and last longer, those made of polystyrene and plywood cost more but get damaged easily,” he said.
D Rajeshwari, who runs a gift shop at Puliakulam, said Christmas decorations are selling like hot cakes. “The sale is getting better with each passing day. Cribs, stars, Christmas trees and decoration items are in demand. Christmas trees made of plastic are sold for 50 to 500 depending upon the size.”
Meanwhile, hotels and educational institutions offering hotel management and catering courses conducted cake mixing ceremonies and have kept them ready for Christmas.
