By: Prasenjit Deb GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will start collecting parking fees from all 53 parking lots under its jurisdiction from next year.
The decision was taken after GMC found that some unidentified persons were collecting illegal parking fees from the public in the name of the civic body for the last several months.
The civic body had earlier issued a list of 43 parking lots, which were free for the public, and 10 others that were chargeable until the issuance of a fresh tender for the 2021-22 financial year.
Mayor Mrigen Sarania said the GMC is likely to start collecting the parking fees from January to prevent unidentified persons from doing so.
"Despite notices warning of strict action against illegal parking fees collection, we got information that some unscrupulous persons have been collecting money in the name of GMC. We have not been able to identify the culprits yet. They have brought us shame by duping the people of Guwahati. There are around 53 parking slots of which we made 43 free for the public and 10 were chargeable. But next year onwards, in all probability from January itself, the rest of the slots will also be made chargeable," he said.
The mayor said the GMC had already floated fresh tenders for the 43 parking slots in November last for bidders with GMC authorized trade licenses.
"The bidders will have to collect the fees on behalf of GMC. The parking charges will be the same as the current ones. The vehicles will be charged for parking on an hourly basis, i.e. Rs 10/hour for two-wheelers and Rs 20/hour for four-wheelers," he added.
The 43 free parking slots under the GMC, which will now be chargeable, are HB Road (2 slots), ARB Road, GS road (14 slots), GNB Road (3 slots), AT Road (2 slots), Dispur super market, AK Azad road, Pandu port road, Danish road, Beltola Basistha Road (2 slots), Express Highway, Hengrabari road, Jaswant road, Betkuchi, SJ road, RG Baruah road, B Baruah road, Manipur East Road, VIP Road (Panjabari road), Patharkuchi road, Sati Joymoti road, Md Tayabullah road, Ulubari flyover, Sixmile flyover and Athgaon.
