Fight over going to kirtan led to murder
Jaipur: Anuj Sharma, arrested for the murder of his widowed aunt Saroj Sharma, told investigators that she frequently meddled in his life and often stopped him from going out of the house.
Police said Anuj, 32, killed his 60-year-old aunt when his father and sister had gone to Indore. “Anuj told her aunt he wanted to go to Delhi and Haridwar to attend some kirtans. But she objected, and a quarrel broke out between them in the kitchen. Anuj got angry, grasped a hammer, and hit Saroj with it, causing her death,” said a police official.
Saroj had lost her husband, who was the elder brother of Anuj’s father, in 1995. Her two daughters are settled in Ajmer and Bikaner, and her son is in Canada. Saroj was diagnosed with cancer some years ago and had been attending chemotherapy sessions in Jaipur. Anuj’s father, a retired senior bank executive, used to take her for treatment. Anuj’s mother had died of Covid. “It was not a cold-blooded murder. He (Anuj) did not plan it,” said a senior police official.
