Japan's Coast Guard said it was informed by the Defense Ministry that North Korea’s suspected missile landed in waters between Japan and the Korean Peninsula, but did not say how close it was from the Japanese coast. Japan’s NHK national television quoted unnamed government sources saying the missile landed outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone.

Russia's defence minister visits troops involved in Ukraine operation - ministry
Russia's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu inspected the country's troops involved in Moscow's "special military operation" in Ukraine, the defence ministry said on Sunday. "The head of the Russian military flew around the areas of deployment of troops and checked the advanced positions of Russian units in the zone of the special military operation," the ministry said on the Telegram messaging app. Moscow calls its invasion in Ukraine a "special military operation" to "demilitarise" and "denazify" its neighbour. Kyiv and its allies call it an unprovoked act of conquest.
Search continues for 9 campers caught in Malaysia landslide
The search for missing campers caught in a deadly landslide at an unlicensed campsite in Malaysia continued for a third day on Sunday, with the fire department saying the chance of finding survivors is slim. At least 24 people died after a landslide tore through a campsite early on Friday while campers slept in tents at Batang Kali, a popular hilly area about 50km (30 miles) north of capital Kuala Lumpur. Of the 94 people caught in the landslide, 61 were safe and nine still missing, the Selangor state fire and rescue department said. Those killed included seven children.

As Canada welcomes the world to the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, the government of Canada reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to address plastic pollution and protect biodiversity here at home, and around the world. Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change; Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health; Joyce Murray, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, on Saturday announced the next important steps in the government's ban on harmful single-use plastics. Effective from December 20, the import and manufacture of single-use plastic checkout bags, cutlery, food service ware made from problematic plastics, stir sticks, and straws that are hard to recycle (with some exceptions) will be prohibited. The ban on the manufacture and import of ring carriers will enter into force in June 2023.

Two buses collided with each other at the Greater Noida Expressway near Knowledge Park of Noida, said Greater Noida police on Sunday morning.According to reports, twenty people were injured while two others are in critical condition. Mainland China reported 2,097 new symptomatic COVID-19 infections on Dec. 17, compared with 2,286 a day earlier, the National Health Commission said on Sunday. Excluding imported infections, China reported 2,028 new local symptomatic cases, down from 2,229 a day earlier. China stopped reporting asymptomatic cases from Wednesday, citing a lack of testing among people with no symptoms that was making it difficult to accurately tally the total count.

Two boys shot at in school rivalry in UP
Two teenaged students were shot at by three unidentified masked youths in Deoband of Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district. The students have been admitted to a hospital where their condition is said to be stable. Vinay Kumar, 17, and Siddhartha Kumar, 15, students of Class 12 and 9 respectively, were on their way to their school when the incident occurred.

The mysterious killing of former Afghan national security forces continues despite the general amnesty announced with the reemergence of the Taliban to power in August 2021, The Khaama Press News Agency reported citing independent sources. Under the announcement made by the Taliban after the takeover of Kabul, all Afghan military personnel who served for different security entities of the previous regime were barred from being detained, tortured, or imprisoned, the Afghan news agency said. However, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has reported that the summary killings and enforced disappearances have taken place despite the Taliban's announced amnesty for former government civilian and military officials and reassurances from the Taliban leadership that they would hold their forces accountable for violations of the amnesty order.
India makes plea at COP15 to boost nature funding
India's Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav has expressed hope that the undergoing UN biodiversity summit, referred to as COP15, will reach a consensus on putting in place the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. Speaking at the plenary in Montreal that was dumped several centimetres of snow, Yadav said reversing ecosystem degradation and halting global biodiversity loss are essential for the socioeconomic development and wellbeing of people, and for advancing global sustainability. "India, under the leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working towards restoring and conserving its rich biodiversity, which includes one of the world's richest mix of flora and fauna," Yadav wrote in a blog on Saturday.
Constable injured during an encounter in Bareilly, two arrested
Two accused riding on a motorbike opened fire at a constable in an encounter with the police on Friday morning during a checking operation of Naktiya Chowki in Cantt Police station area of Bareilly. They were identified as Yashpal and Vikas. Yaspal fired at the constable, confirmed the police. While Vikas accompanied him on the bike. The accused were arrested by the police. They got injured along with the constable. They were sent to the district hospital for treatment, confirmed the police.
