MADURAI: A man murdered his wife on Friday following a quarrel over loans taken from micro-finance companies. According to sources, Muniraja from Malampatti near Melur and his wife Kalaivani had taken loans from micro-financing companies and were selling apparel in the neighbouring villages.
They used to carry saris, blouses and nighties on two-wheelers to villages for sale. However, they could not earn enough to repay the loans and had to borrow more money.
Unable to face company agents, Kalaivani had gone to stay with her parents in Madurai while Muniraja stayed in Malampatti with their two children.
Frustrated over the loans and pressure from collection agents, Muniraja started a quarrel with Kalaivani when she returned to their house on Friday. Following arguments, Muniraja picked up a sickle and hacked Kalaivani to death. Their children had gone to school when the incident occurred, police said. Muniraja later surrendered at Melur police station.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Melur government hospital for post-mortem. A murder case been booked against Muniraja.
