MUMBAI: At 35.6 degrees Celsius on Friday, Mumbai reported the highest day temperatures in the country. A day earlier, at 34.9 degrees Celsius, day temperatures were highest as compared to weather stations across the state, the Met said.
On Friday, Pune recorded maximum temperature of 32.3 degrees Celsius, Nashik 31.5 degrees, Dahanu 31.8 and Ratnagiri 35.4 degrees.
Weather officials said the reason for the high temperatures was the presence of south-easterly winds at the lower level. "The deep depression in the Arabian sea changed the wind pattern, making it south easterly. Models indicate the presence of these winds over the next two days," said a weather bureau official.
Private forecasting agency, Skymet Weather, also said that Thursday's day temperature of 34.9 degrees in Mumbai was the highest in the country. However, India Meteorological Department was not able to confirm this.
Night temperature in the city also remained above normal. On Friday, minimum temperature recorded at the weather bureau's Colaba observatory was 24.4 degrees, and at Santacruz it was 23 degrees Celsius.
Until a week ago, minimum temperature in the city was below 20 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, the Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum of 18 degrees and the record at the Colaba observatory was 21 degrees.
Users on social media commented on how humid conditions were forcing them to keep the air-conditioning on even in the month of December which is unusual. "Getting the a/c serviced all year round is the only way! Sweating away to glory!," commented a user from the twitter handle @anupamapatnaik.
