Back in 2020, Supreme Court declared no sale or registration of BS 4 vehicles from March 31st 2020 and BS6 emissions standards kicked in from 1 April 2020. Due to these norms, certain models like Baleno RS with a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine and engines like 1.3-litre multijet from Fiat had to be discontinued.
Many automotive manufacturers have been forced to either port older engines into BS6 or make new engines to comply with the norms. This resulted in the retirement of the most iconic and superhit engine cars.
In this article, let’s take a look at BS4 engine cars that were discontinued.
1. Maruti Suzuki Vitara BrezzaThe first on the list is the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. When Brezza made its debut back in 2016, it was offered only with a diesel engine. The Brezza was powered by a 1.3-litre multijet turbocharged diesel engine sourced from Fiat.
This 1.3-litre turbo diesel was also known as the national engine of India till a few years back. The 1.3 turbo diesel engine is featured across various car brands such as Fiat, Maruti Suzuki, Chevrolet and Tata Motors in the past.
2. Maruti Suzuki CiazAnother Maruti on the list is the Maruti Ciaz. The Ciaz was offered with a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine called DDiS 225.
Unfortunately, the in-house developed 1.5-litre diesel engine only ever found its way in two models – the Ciaz and Ertiga – and had a very short lifespan of just over a year.
This engine used to produce 94 bhp of power and 225 Nm of torque and was paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.
3. Ford EndeavourThe Ford Endeavour was one of the most popular full-size SUVs in India.
The Ford Endeavour came with a 3.2-litre, 5-cylinder Turbocharged diesel engine, when BS6 norms hit it was replaced with a 2.0-litre diesel.
The 3.2-litre Diesel engine in the Ford Endeavour produced 197 Bhp and 470 Nm of torque.
4. Honda CivicThe Honda Civic made its India debut back in 2005, and since then it was only offered with a petrol engine. However, in 2019, Honda launched the diesel avatar of the Civic.
The Civic Diesel was powered by a 1.6-litre I-DTEC Turbo Diesel engine which produced 120 bhp of power and 300 Nm of torque and was mated with a 6-speed manual transmission.
5. Volkswagen PoloThe Volkswagen Polo is one of the most loved and popular hatchbacks in the Indian market. The car has now been discontinued from the Indian market but, it is still very popular among enthusiasts.
The VW Polo came with a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine which was discontinued after BS6 norms. The 1.5-litre TDI produced 90 bhp of power and 230 Nm of torque.
6. Toyota Innova CrystaToyota recently took wraps off the new Toyota Innova Holycross. The Hycross is only available with a string hybrid Petrol engine options. The good news is that the Crysta Diesel will be sold alongside the Hycross.
The Innova Crysta was offered with a 2.8-litre Turbocharged diesel engine which was discontinued after BS6 norms kicked in.
The 2.8-litre engine in the Innova Crysta produced 174 PS of power and 360 Nm of torque and was paired with an automatic transmission.
7. Volkswagen TiguanThe Volkswagen Tiguan is a premium full-size SUV. After BS6 norms the 2.0-litre turbo Diesel engine was discontinued. The 2.0-litre TDI engine in Tiguan produced 143 bhp of power and 340 Nm of torque and came with a 7-speed DSG Gearbox. This engine is based on the same family of engines which were offered in various Volkswagen group cars.
