THANE: The Maharashtra government has approved Rs 148 crore for an ambitious advanced integrated solid waste management project for the cities of Ambernath, Badlapur and Ulhasnagar to solve the problem of solid waste.
The integrated solid waste management project will be set up for these three cities at a 13 acre plot situated in Valivali area in Badlapur city which will have capacity of 600 metric tons of garbage.
Kalyan Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde informed people about the project at a press conference held in Thane.
Shinde, under whose Lok Sabha constituency the project is getting implemented, expressed hope that this project would become a model and a pillar project for the state.
Shinde said, "Solid waste management is a new challenge facing the cities at present."
He said he had started a study to solve the garbage problem in his constituency.
In Ambernath town, the problem of solid waste management has become serious.
For that, the MP had gone abroad, along with the senior Ambernath Municipal council employees and public representatives, to learn the foreign technology.
After that he started the movement to implement this project.
However, since more waste was required for this project as the cost of the project was more, the administration decided to implement the project by adding more municipal corporations.
Later, Shinde held meetings with Badlapur Municipal Council and Ulhasnagar Municipal Council and finally an integrated plan was prepared.
Accordingly, the MMRDA administration had sanctioned a fund of 148 crore for this purpose.
Now the urban development department of the state government has approved this project.
The project will come up in a 13 acres plot out of 23 acres at Survey No 188, Valivali area in Badlapur.
The waste will be sorted and treated at different levels and the remaining waste will be used for landfill.
In view of the usefulness of this project, Mumbai IIT has appreciated the project and has given the certificate, said Shinde.
The project will also generate employment opportunities.
The waste collection process will be streamlined.
Its information will be available on a real-time basis and its dashboard and call center will also be started.
