CHENNAI: A group of 15 college
students in Tambaram broke open the automatic door of an MTC bus after being locked inside it by its crew for creating a ruckus.
The students from different colleges in Tambaram had boarded a bus (31 A, East Tambaram to Agaram Then) on Thursday and immediately began misbehaving with women passengers. A few of them were singing songs and not allowing women to occupy seats meant for them.
They were also hindering women commuters from boarding or alighting from the bus, fellow passengers told police.
When the bus reached Thiruvancheri, the driver halted it and locked the doors before informing police. The students argued with the bus crew and banged on the door repeatedly to open it, but the crew refused. On noticing a police patrol arriving at the scene, the students broke open the doors and escaped. Police tried to chase them but could not succeed. While some of the students boarded bikes of other students following the bus, some others managed to hop on to share autorickshaws.
Police have filed a case and have launched a hunt for the students. Passengers were made to alight from the bus and board another one to reach their destinations.
Police have collected videos from passengers as evidence.
"These acts of the students were uncalled for ... this delays our commute time. It is high time police patrol carry out random checks of buses to rein in these louts ... to call them students would be unfair," said Vishali, an office-goer from Tambaram.
Police said they have been conducting counselling sessions in colleges asking students to refrain from hooliganism in public spaces.
