LUDHIANA: The body of a Class XI student of a government school, who was missing since Wednesday afternoon, was found at a vacant area of Bhamian on Thursday morning.
The body was wrapped in a blanket and her school bag and shoes were missing. Prima facie, the case appeared to be that of murder as there were injury marks around the neck, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Anchal, an 18-year-old from Tajpur. The Class XI student of a government school in Division number 3 area used to go to school in an auto-rickshaw. Residents of Bhamian area noticed the body and informed the police control room at around 7:30am on Wednesday.
Ganga Charan, father of the victim, a street vendor, said his daughter left home on Wednesday morning to appear for an exam in her school.
She was to return by 2pm but when she did not come by 3pm, he said he went to her school, where he was told that all the children had left.
"I reached Jamalpur police station to lodge a complaint but a woman police officer asked me to go to division number 3 police station as the school fell under the jurisdiction of that police station. Then I reached division number 3 police station where police personnel asked for some pictures of Anchal.
I gave them pictures. Thereafter, police asked me to come on Wednesday morning. Today, at around 8am, I received a call from the police that Anchal was found dead," he said. Inspector Bikramjit Singh, SHO, Jamalpur police station said the area where the girl's body was found led to her residence.
He also said that while there was no visible sign of sexual assault, police would wait for the autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of death.
The girl's father said that he suspected the involvement of a man behind the murder. He added that about two weeks ago, he found Anchal talking to him over the phone and came to know that he was her boyfriend.
"I had taken Anchal's mobile and stopped her from talking to him. He could have done this to Anchal," he alleged. Inspector Bikramjit said that the father of the deceased has told the police about the man and police are tracing him.
