Belagavi: Allamaprabhu Swami of Siddhasansthan Mutt at Chinchani in Chikodi taluk, popular as ‘Kannada seer’ for his pro-Kannada activities spanning over three decades, will chair the Belagavi district-level literary meet scheduled for December 21 and 22 at Chikodi town. Mahesh Joshi, president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP), will inaugurate the event, said Mangala Metgud, district KSP president. KLES chairman Prabhakar Kore, who turned 75 recently, will be felicitated during the event. In a symposium on the first day, writer Ramkrishna Marathe will speak on ‘Border area problems and solutions’, and Gurupad Mariguddi on ‘Kannada as a language of survival’. Agriculture will be discussed in another symposium. The second day will start with a poetry session. At symposia for women, Rajashri Gudaganavar will speak on ‘Technology and women’, Priyanvada Hulagabali on ‘Challenges before working women’. Achievers from different sectors will be felicitated in the evening. Allamaprabhu Swami will give a presidential speech during the valedictory. Some Kannada-related resolutions will also be passed on the occasion.
SDM university convocationDharwad: The annual convocation of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwar University, Dharwad, will be held on Thursday at 5pm at Shri Veerendra Heggade Kala Kshetra here. Caning of protesters decriedHubballi: Samata Sena state president Gurunath Ullikashi condemned the police lathicharge on Dalit organisations when they were seeking the implementation of Justice A J Sadashiva Report in Bengaluru. He told reporters here on Wednesday that officials behind the lathicharge should be suspended within 24 hours, else protests will be staged across the state. “The government has formed a sub-committee to implement Justice Sadashiva Commission Report, which has only delayed the process. The Belagavi legislature session should recommend its implementation. If not, Belagavi Chalo protest will be taken out,” he said. Fakkanna Doddamani, Revansiddappa Hosamani and others were present.
‘Bring dropouts back to school’Dharwad: Education is the only tool to bring about transformation, so it is the duty of society to see every child is educated, said Unicef regional convener K Raghavendra Bhat. Speaking at a convention of the members of School Development and Monitoring Committees (SDMCs) organised by Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement at Alur Venkatrao Bhavan here on Wednesday, he said many students drop out from schools owing to several reasons without completing basic education, and it is the duty of SDMCs to identify such children and bring them back to schools. Bhat said the government has brought in several educational programmes and laws to protect the rights of children. SDMC members, along with teachers, should create awareness of children’s rights and secure their lives. Cases of child marriage and child labour are reported in both rural and urban places, and efforts should be made to rescue such children and send them to schools, Bhat added. SVYM convener Jayanth K S said these conventions are being held to strengthen government schools.
Music concert on Dec 18Dharwad: Kalashri Samskruthika Vedike, Guru Krupa Sangeeta Vidyalaya and the Kannada and culture department will jointly organise ‘Sangeeta Sinchana’, a classical music concert in memory of vocalist Chandrashekar Puranikmath at Srujana auditorium in Dharwad at 4pm on Sunday. On the occasion, Pandit M Venkateshkumar will release the book ‘Ganaraga Rasayana’. Vedike secretary K Ganapati Bhat said Sandeep Chaterjee of Kolkata (santoor), Sripad Hegde Kampli (vocal) and Rohini Bhat (violin) will perform at the concert. Uday Kulkarni, Gurumurthy Vaidya, Pancham Upadhyay will accompany them on tabala, Satish Bhat on harmonium, and Nagendra Bhat on pakhwaj.
Mayurotsava tomorrowHubballi: Mayur Dance Academy and the department Kannada and culture, Bengaluru, will organise ‘Mayurotsava’ at Swai Gandharva hall here on December 16. Academy president Vidushi Hema Waghmode told reporters here on Wednesday that the academy, established in 2005, has branches at Kumara Park, Lingaraj Nagar, Keshwapur, Navanagar, and other districts. Around 650 students are learning dance here, she added. On the occasion, Padma Sri Venkatesh Kumar will be honoured with Mayur Sanman. Kannada and culture department assistant director Kumar Bekeri, Swarna Group, MD, V S V Prasad and LIC, manager, Shankar Hegde will be the chief guests for the programme.
