Berhampur: Several Tibetan women in exile, who have settled in Chandragiri of Gajapati district, on Wednesday staged a protest here against the zero-Covid policy of China. They also condemned alleged human rights violations by China in Tibet.
Clad in their traditional dress, the Tibetan women carried banners appealing to extend solidarity to their agitation and also waved the flags of India and Tibet. They also raised slogans against Chinese President Xi Jinping and praised their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.
The Regional Tibetan Women Association (RTWA), Odisha, also launched a signature campaign near the Khallikote Unitary University (KUU) here seeking the support of Indians towards their protest.
“People of China and Tibet have no right of speech. Human rights are being violated in these two countries. We launched a signature campaign against the violation of human rights. The signatures will be sent to the UN Human Rights Council demanding its intervention,” said Tsering Yangzom, adviser to RTWA.
“The zero-Covid policy of Beijing has caused misery to Tibetans. Some video clips revealed that people in Tibet can’t work, are facing increasing food prices and lack of freedom of movement. They are all locked up in their houses, while Lhasa has become a prison,” said K Choden, president, RTWA.
Tibetans in exile across India and also other countries have been protesting against Beijing’s policies like the zero-Covid policy and human rights violation in China and Tibet for the last few days and demanding their withdrawal, she said.
