Dr Birendra Saraf set to become Advocate General of Maharashtra

He has been practicing before the Bombay High Court for 25 years

Senior advocate Dr Birendra Saraf is likely to be appointed as the new Advocate General for Maharashtra.

In its recent meeting, the cabinet recommended Saraf's name. Once Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari gives his approval, Saraf will resume the post.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra cabinet headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde accepted the resignation of the incumbent AG Ashutosh Kumbhakoni.

Having graduated from the Government Law College, Mumbai, Saraf was a Mumbai University topper during the three years of graduation.

As a junior lawyer, he worked in the chambers of the present Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. After the latter's elevation as the judge of the Bombay High Court in 2000, Saraf joined the chambers of former Advocate General Ravi Kadam. In 2020, he was designated as a senior advocate.

Saraf served as Secretary of the Bombay Bar Association for six years and is presently its Vice-President.

In his rising career graph, he has appeared in several high-profile and controversial cases.

In 2020, Saraf successfully argued for Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut in her plea challenging the demolition activity by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on her property in Bandra.

He also appeared in the proceedings of the contentious dispute between Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited and its largest shareholder Invesco Developing Markets Fund.

Saraf has represented Dhyandev Wankhede, father of the Indian Revenue Services officer Sameer Wankhede, who formerly headed the Narcotics Control Bureau during Shah Rukh Khan's son, Aryan Khan's drugs-related case.
