Mysuru: Karnataka’s government is seeking Ramsar recognition for three more sites. According to the information shared by the Union minister of state for environment, forest, and climate change, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, the Centre has stated that it has received a proposal to declare three wetlands — Aghanashini Estuary, Magadi Kere Conservation Reserve, and Ankasamudra Bird Conservation Reserve — as Ramsar sites.
The information was shared is in response to a question raised by Mandya MP Sumalatha Ambareesh.
In August, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary in Mandya was given the recognition. It has the distinction of being the first Ramsar site in Karnataka. India has 75 Ramsar sites.
Aghanashini Estuary is located in Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district while Magadi Kere Conservation Reserve is in Gadag district. It is spread over 134.37 acres in Magadi and Holaapur villages of Shirahatti taluk. Ankasamudra Bird Conservation Reserve is located on the banks of Tungabhadra dam backwater area in Hagaribommanahalli taluk in Ballari district.
“Ramsar site recognition is already given to Ranganatittu bird sanctuary in Mandya,” Sumalatha, who raised the question in the ongoing Lok Sabha session, told TOI.
On her question on special schemes for the promotion and protection of Ranganathittu bird sanctuary, the minister said the protection and management of protected areas are primarily the responsibility of the state governments/ UT administrations concerned. However, the ministry provides financial assistance to states/ UTs for the protection and management of protected areas, including the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Development of Wildlife Habitats.
According to former IFS officer Punati Sridhar, once a bird sanctuary is notified as a Ramsar site, it will come under the Ramsar convention with all its advantages, including international cooperation, conservation, research, etc, involving a variety of specialised international bodies and funding.
