Coimbatore: The Podanur police arrested five youths and seized 13g of methamphetamine, a recreational drug, from them in two separate incidents on Monday night. Four of them were selling the drug to youths in and around Sundarapuram, Podanur and Othakkalmandapam areas for 3,000 a gram for the past few days.
Sub-inspector Thamaraikannan and his team spotted the youths on patrol. Police conducted body searches and found the contraband items with them.
In one of the incidents, police arrested U Harishbabu, 22, from Sathya Nagar near Kuniyamuthur, M Feroz Khan, 24, from Maharaja Colony at Kuniyamuthur, M Mohammed Labeeb, 23, from Malappuram in Kerala, and N Murugavel, 25, from Bommanampalayam near Vadavalli. The seized 11g of drug from them in the crystal form.
“The youths procured around 20g of methamphetamine from Bengaluru a few days ago and were supplying in the city. Methamphetamine is a potent central nervous system stimulant. Youths use it in rave parties,” said a police officer.
The arrested youths were booked under sections 22 (a), 27 (b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They were remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday evening.
In another case, the Podanur police arrested 19-year-old R Yadukrishna, of Erimayur in Palakkad district, on Pollachi Road at Eachanari on Monday evening for possession of 2g of methamphetamine and 250g of ganja for sales. Yadukrishnan is a second year BBA student in a private college in the district. He was remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.
