BARWANI: A class 10 student hanged himself in his classroom during breakfast break at a private school in MP's Barwani district on Tuesday, the tragedy being caught on the school's CCTV cameras.
It seems no one was manning the CCTV feed at the time because the child took some time to tie a noose yet there was no attempt to save him.
Police named the victim as 15-year-old Om Septa. "Prima facie, it appears that Om took the extreme step under the pressure of studies. His half-yearly exams were on and according to classmates, he was upset as he didn't do well in the science paper on Monday," Barwani subdivisional police officer Rooprekha Yadav told TOI. A native of Sal Kheda of Rajpur tehsil area, Om was studying in the school since class 6 and stayed in the hostel.
On December 5, Om had written to the hostel in charge that he finds it convenient to study alone, rather than being schooled by teachers. He wrote that if his test results are poor, he alone would be responsible for it, Yadav said. On Tuesday morning, when students were having their breakfast, Om excused himself to go to the toilet.
When he didn't return for a long time, a friend went looking for him and found him hanging in the classroom, Yadav said.
School principal Govind Bhayal said Om was a "very good-natured boy and focused student" and it never seemed that he would take such a step. Om's body was handed over to his family after autopsy.
