BENGALURU: Fatalities due to road accidents continue to be the highest in Yelahanka. While 52 road fatalities were reported in the police station limits in 2021, the number stood at 40 in the first 10 months of this year.
The second-highest deaths due to road accidents this year - 38 - have been reported from adjoining Chikkajala traffic police limits. Chikkajala had seen the third-highest such deaths (40) in 2021, according to data accessed from 44 traffic police stations in Bengaluru.
Of 675 road-accident fatalities reported in the city last year, Yelahanka and Chikkajala accounted for 7.7% and 6%, respectively. This year, of 577 road-accident deaths in the first 10 months, the two places reported 6.9% and 6.6%, respectively.
Wide roads, highwaysSpecial traffic police commissioner MA Saleem said presence of broad roads and highways in and around Yelahanka is the main cause for high fatalities. "Highways heading to Hyderabad and Doddaballapur pass through Yelahanka. Kempegowda International Airport expressway also scythes through Yelahanka and Chikkajala. Vehicles move at higher speed on these roads and that's why they see more fatal accidents," Saleem explained.
Kamakshipalya, KS Layout, Kengeri, Devanahalli and Peenya are the other traffic police stations that report a high number of road-accident fatalities compared to other parts of the city.
"When it comes to places like Kamakshipalya, KS Layout and KR Puram, the Outer Ring Road stretches are where more fatal accidents are seen. This is not the case in the Central Business District. For example, there has not been a single road-accident fatality in and around Ashoknagar in the last eight months," he said.
Cubbon Park, Ulsoorgate, High Grounds, Fraser Town, Indiranagar, Shivajinagar, Upparpet, Chickpet, City Market, Adugodi, Malleswaram, Basavanagudi, Chamrajpet, Jayanagar and RT Nagar traffic police stations have each reported less than 10 road-accident deaths in the first 10 months of this year.
Saleem said they will carry out a scientific and micro-analysis study of fatal road accidents reported from different parts of the city to explore solutions.
