BENGALURU: Food Street in VV Puram, where over 50 vendors sell lip-smacking dishes and draw thousands of Bengalureans every evening, is set to get a facelift. The foundation stone for the redevelopment work, to be undertaken by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, will be laid on Tuesday.

Widened footpaths, pedestrianisation of the street after dusk, Church Street-like ambience, tables for customers, handwash area and an entrance plaza are among the features planned under the Rs 6 crore project.
BBMP special commissioner (finance) Jayaram Raipur said at a press meet that Bengaluru has many streets where quality food is sold by the roadside drawing thousands of people. This tradition is over 400 years old. Kadalekai Parishe is being organised for many years, and now the government is providing a platform to farmers and vendors, Raipur added.
Food Street is about 200-metre long and has at least 50 vendors selling food items, but lacks proper infrastructure. As part of the project, the Palike will build a dedicated space for vendors where they can sell food from evening till mid-night. Apart from that, stormwater drain and footpaths will be redesigned and the road width will be reduced.
