SALEM: A fire broke out at the paediatric ward of the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital (SGMKMCH) at 10pm on Sunday. However, the fire and rescue services personnel put out the fire within a few minutes and there were no casualties reported.
"Electric cables in the ward caught fire due to a short circuit," a doctor who was at the ward during the fire accident told TOI. The maintenance personnel immediately disconnected the power supply to the ward and alerted the fire service at Shevapet.
"Firefighters came to the spot and put out the fire within a few minutes," the doctor added. A few patients from the ward were shifted to another ward. Initial inquiry revealed that the power cables in the ward were worn out. The hospital management has already informed the public works department to change the cables.
"But they have not changed the cables yet," the doctor alleged, adding that it was the fourth fire accident at the SGMKMCH this year. The first accident took place on April 18, the second on July 27, and the third on October 13.
