KOLKATA: Actor
Paresh Rawal has sought two months' time to appear before Kolkata Police. In a letter to cops, Rawal, who was supposed to appear on Monday, explained why he is seeking time. DC (Central) Rupesh Kumar confirmed the actor had communicated with the cops, but refused to divulge details.
An officer said Rawal "agreed" to cooperate with cops, but at a later date. "The response letter is detailed and explanatory," he said.
Lalbazar officers, though, refused to comment on whether the actor will be allowed more time or a second notice will be served. Cops said they have decided to contact the organizers of the rally where Rawal made the controversial statement.
Rawal's remark on fish-eating Bengalis and "equating" people here with illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingya immigrants had sparked a furore across the country. CPM state secretary Md Salim had lodged an FIR against Rawal in the first week of December. Trinamool had questioned BJP's "mindset of repeatedly insulting Bengalis". The FIR has been lodged under multiple penal sections.
