Country working to fulfil Ambedkar’s dream: LS Speaker
Jaipur: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla here on Sunday said that all citizens are working with complete dedication to fulfil Bhimrao Ambedkar’s dreams of making India a developed nation.
While addressing a Samvidhan Katha Vachan programme on Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s Mahaparinirvan Divas, Birla admitted that historically, women did not get enough opportunities to receive an education and move forward, which was rectified by the Constitution written by Ambedkar.
“Equal rights and opportunities for women became a constitutional obligation for the nation. Ambedkar made efforts for gender and social equality in the Constitution to ensure that every community and class including women get their due rights,” said Birla.
Further explaining the contribution of the constitution in shaping the lives of women, Birla said that the egalitarian spirit of the Constitution has given opportunities to women to move forward. “Today women are progressing fast in diverse fields like education, sports, science, technology, defence, communication, space, business etc,” said Birla. Mentioning the duties enshrined in the Constitution, Birla expressed hope that all citizens especially youths would emerge as responsible citizens by performing duties towards the nation and ensuring the progress of the country.
Calling the constitution gender neutral, the Lok Sabha Speaker said that the Indian Constitution did not discriminate between men and women, while many developed countries of the world did practice gender-based discrimination in their early elections.
