Jaisalmer: Girls are not encouraged to study and make a career in the backward border districts of Barmer and
Jaisalmer.
But, battling social evils and superstitions, a girl from a farmer family in Barmer has set an example. She was married during her childhood. But, going against all odds, she started working as an anganwadi worker.
Following her dreams, Hemlata Jakhar has today become a sub-inspector. She reached her village for the first time after bagging the post. The villagers carried her on their shoulders and took her around the village. The women of the village sang auspicious songs in her welcome. “The problems in the life can stop you but cannot break you,” she said.
Her father Durgaram Jakhar, a resident of Sarnu village of Barmer district, is very proud of his daughter. “It was her passion to study. Even after becoming an anganwadi worker, she continued her studies and was selected as sub-inspector in Rajasthan police. She studied till Class VIII at the government school in Sarnu Chimanji village. She walked 14km daily to study from Class 9 to 12 at a government school. She continued her further studies as a private student. She was selected as sub-inspector in 2021 exams,” Durgaram said.
“No male or female from Sarnu and Sarnu Chimanji villages has become a sub-inspector. She is the first from the village to become sub-inspector. She always had a passion to join the police. She also loves playing sports and she has been a kabbadi player at the state level,” he added. Hemlata gives credit for her success to her parents, grandmother, brother, sister and the entire family.
