The Netherlands and Argentina's World Cup quarter-final went into extra time on Friday, with the score level at 2-2 after two late goals from substitute Wout Weghorst dragged the Dutch back into the bad-tempered contest.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi had superbly set up Nahuel Molina for their first-half opener before coolly slotting in a penalty in the 73rd minute, but Weghorst's header 10 minutes later sparked the Netherlands into life and he scored again deep into stoppage time to send the contest into extra time.

With a little more than 30 seconds of added time, the Dutch have won a free-kick just outside the box and Messi shakes his head.

WOW! And the Dutch have levelled as Weghorst scores again to drag the game into extra time.

The last six minutes or so have seen some rough tackles on players on both sides.

10 minutes of added time now and the Dutch have done nothing from a free-kick won.

Argentina holding on to dear life here.

Paredes with a poor challenge, and ten players jump out from the bench and start a mini riot as the ref shows a yellow to all the players involved.

In the 71st minute, Acuna is challenged on the left and is felled in the box by Dumfries.

PENALTY for Argentina.

Messi to take it and he cooly slots it in to give Argentina a 2-0 lead.

Possession with the Dutch now but there is just no real intent to go deep.

Argentina have reclaimed possession and Messi is challenged in the box by van Dyke. Messi goes down just outside the box, he gets a free kick. Oh! The ball goes sailing over the keeper.

Argentina have begun the second half on a positive footing with early attacks into the Dutch half.

Argentina get a corner but nothing comes off it.

The Dutch have now got a move into the Argetine half, De Jong wants to pass to Blind but nicely intercepted by the defender to deny the cross.

Lionel Messi set up Nahuel Molina for the opening goal in the 35th minute to give Argentina a 1-0 lead over the Netherlands at halftime in their World Cup quarter-final on Friday.

With the Argentinian fans far outnumbering their Dutch counterparts, the stadium was bouncing from the start, and Messi thrilled his compatriots with some of his trademark penetrating dribbles.

The 35-year-old's rush at the heart of the Dutch defence paid dividends 10 minutes before the break as he slipped a sublime ball through for Molina to clip home from close range.

The winner of Friday's clash will meet Croatia, who beat Brazil on penalties, in the semi-finals next Tuesday.

Argentina have most of the ball in the first 15 minutes of the game. There have been forays into the Dutch half but there have been misses.

First real attack from the Netherlands comes in the 16th minute. Dumfries volleys the back across the face of goal, but Blind does not get enough of it.
