Mandous intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Thursday evening but is likely to cross the coast at Mamallapuram as a cyclonic storm tonight, according to the India Meteorological Department. Wind speeds may hit 65kmph-75kmph, gusting to 85kmph, during landfall between Puducherry and Sriharikota. All coastal districts from Tiruvallur to Nagapattinam have been issued a red alert over wind speeds from December 9. The IMD said Mandous lay centered 440km southeast of Chennai and may weaken into a cyclonic storm by forenoon on December 9. “The cyclone interacts with the sea surface temperature, surrounding and upper atmosphere and the weather is meant to change continuously,” said S Balachandran, deputy director general, IMD, Chennai. IMD has issued a red alert for Kancheepuram, Chengalpet and Villupuram for December 9 as these districts are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall (21cm or more) at one or two places. The agency issued an orange alert to eight districts onDecember 9 and 10. Chennai and Tiruvallur are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 cm to 20 cm) on December 10. The government, meanwhile, said it was prepared for emergency situations. Twelve state and national disaster response force units had reached the districts likely to be hit. Government buses will not be operated on Thursday and Friday at night. There is no official wordon train or flight cancellations, but city airport authorities said domestic flights might be disrupted from Friday afternoon. Tamil Nadu: NDRF on standby amid Mandous alerts in Chennai
In view of the cyclone Mandous maintaining its intensity of 'Severe Cyclonic Storm' till the early morning hours today, the National Disaster Response Force team were kept on standby in Chennai, informed officials on Friday. The officials added that the teams were ready with equipment so as to take note of any untoward incident. "NDRF is ready to face the Mandous Cyclone situation in Chennai. The NDRF team in Chennai Adayar Indra Nagar has been placed ready where they have packed rescue materials to move when a tough situation arises. Once the alert from state officials is communicated NDRF team will move immediately to the needed spot," said Sub-Inspector NDRF, Sandeep Kumar.

Cyclone Mandous: Four flights from Chennai cancelled; some others suffer delays
Four flights scheduled to depart from Chennai on Friday afternoon were cancelled while many morning flights suffered delays as cyclone Mandous edged closer to land, bringing strong winds. Most of the cancelled flights were to be operated using smaller ATR aircraft. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the airlines have issued an advisory telling passengers to set out to the airport after checking flight schedules to confirm about delays or cancellations. Two flights to Madurai at 2.50pm and 4.30pm and one each to Kadapa and Mumbai were cancelled. Seven flights, including four international flights, departed after a delay of more than an hour. More than 20 flights including services to Patna, Madurai, Singapore, Varanasi were delayed by less than an hour.
