Tight security in place for counting day
Bhubaneswar: Security has been tightened in Padampur for counting of votes on Thursday. Police are on their toes in the wake of high-octane campaigns and slugfest between the BJD and BJP in the run-up to the bypoll.
The counting process is scheduled to start at 8 am at RMC Market Yard, Padampur. At least nine platoons of state police force and one company of Border Security Force (BSF) have been deployed for smooth conduct of counting.
“Our aim is to provide proper security at the counting centre, for crowd control outside the counting centre and manage traffic,” Bargarh SP Smit Parmar said.
“Adequate personnel have been stationed to avoid any untoward incident. We are also alert to avert any unpleasant incident during victory procession of the winning candidate,” he added.
Police have reasons to worry as the bypoll generated much heat owing to aggression shown by both the BJD and BJP during campaigning. Though no violence was reported during campaigning and on the voting day on December 5, an underlying tension persisted across the constituency because of the face-off between the BJD and BJP.
