Holiday show set to raise funds for LGBTQ resources

Local performers are partnering with a downtown Port Huron business to raise funds for LGBTQ resources.
Supa Moe’s Holiday Show will bring drag, burlesque, and food all together at Moe's Corner Deli, located on the corner of Military and Water streets, from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 17.
Tickets to the show can be purchased on Eventbrite and will cost $35. Tickets includes a meal of a soup and salad, which are named after each drag queen. There are only about 40 tickets as capacity is limited.
"What I do specifically is bring worlds together and I look forward to having everyone come together," said Matthew Collins, a performer and event organizer. Collins, also known as his drag queen persona "SupaSalad," will be performing with his troupe, Haus of Salad, for the show.
The holiday themed show will feature five performers, with four doing drag, and the other doing classic burlesque.
Collins said that the performances will all give different perspectives of the holiday, such as one performance on the folklore tale of Krampus, while another being a more "over the top Mrs. Clause."
"Drag in itself is making fun of life, and it's a caricature on life, and getting people to talk about the important issues," Collins said. "It's kind of like a look at tradition and also have a really great time while at the same time doing it for a great cause."
Collins plans on donating all the profits from the show to the Ruth Ellis Center in Detroit. The Ruth Ellis Center is a nonprofit organization that provides long and short-term safe space and trauma-informed support services for runaway, homeless and at-risk LGBTQ+ youth in the region, according to their website.
Collins explained how he always thinks back to his own personal trauma and where he came from, and added that with the recent Club Q shooting in Colorado Springs, it gave him more of a reason to organize the event to have that "visibility and resource" available to the LGBTQ+ community in Port Huron.
"I think that's really important as a resource and hopefully we'll have something like that around here eventually," said Shannon Raynard, owner of Moe's Corner Deli. "I think it's a good mission to get the word out and showcase talent and I'm open to all the pride things happening in town, I think it's a great way for education and tolerance and bringing people to Port Huron."
Raynard added that Moe's is a safe space for everybody, and loves the excitement and atmosphere that's there.
Collins looks forward to seeing people from different backgrounds come together and enjoy a night full of comedy.
