Muslim outfits observe Babri Masjid demolition anniversary
Coimbatore: Security was beefed up across the city on Tuesday as Muslim outfits staged protests to mark the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary.
Social Democratic Party of India conducted a protest at Ukkadam in the morning. Its state vice-president Abdul Hameed, district president Musthafa, Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam general secretary Ku Ramakrishnan and 200 people participated in the protest, raising slogans.
Hameed said they staged the protest to observe the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, and condemn the Supreme Court’s judgment in connection with the same in November 2019. “We are observing this day against the fascism. The Supreme Court was functioning as per the Union government’s direction in the case.”
He urged the parties working against fascism to raise their voice and support the Muslims to retrieve the place and construct Babri Masjid.
The Ikkiya Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, meanwhile, conducted a protest at Kuniyamuthur. More than 100 people participated in the protest, along with the leaders from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Salem and Namakkal districts.
The protesters demanded the government to protect the rights of Muslims and requested not to foist fake cases on them. They also demanded the release of Muslim prisoners who were spending their days behind bars for more than a decade.
Members of TPDK, VCK, Tamil Puligal Katchi and Revolutionary Youth Front and other organizations also took part in the protest.
Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam conducted a protest at Ukkadam in the evening with the participation of around 500 people.
