Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute key updates: Both states step up vigil
The long-standing border dispute flared up a fortnight ago, shortly before the case was due to come up in the SC.
MUMBAI/BENGALURU: Amid the ongoing border dispute, Karnataka and Maharashtra chief ministers spoke to each other over phone and agreed that there should be peace and law and order should be maintained on both sides. The border dispute between both states intensified on Tuesday, with vehicles from either sides being targeted. The border issue is set to come up in SC shortly, and Karnataka is due for polls in April-May.
  • The inter-state border row between Maharashtra and Karnataka escalated sharply between the two BJP governed states with attacks on six trucks entering near Belagavi district on December 6, 2022.
  • The violence erupted near Hirebagewadi, 24km from Belagavi, with Vedike activists pelting stones at the buses.
  • Shiv Sena (UBT) workers retaliated by defacing four Karnataka buses in Pune.
  • The CMs of both states— Eknath Shinde and Basavaraj Bommai—spoke on phone late evening on defusing the situation.
  • Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said that they are working towards development, and such an atmosphere between states is not desirable, especially since this matter is before the Supreme Court. "If a state doesn’t listen, the issue will have to be taken to the Centre."
  • NCP chief Sharad Pawar has gave Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai a 24-hour “ultimatum” to stop the violence, saying he would go to Belagavi if there is no improvement in the situation in 48 hours.
  • Bommai said that Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde had telephonic discussion with him, and they both agreed that there should be peace and law and order to be maintain in both the states.
  • Since there is harmonious relation between the people of both the states, however, there is no change in our stand as far as Karnataka border is concerned. And the legal battle will be pursued in Supreme court, said Bommai.
  • Shiv Sena (UBT)’s MP Sanjay Raut asked where is the CM? How can he watch Maharashtra being insulted? This is a weak government. Even today, the only retaliation has come from the Shiv Sena.
  • As a precautionary measure, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation stopped ST bus services from plying to Karnataka. The Karnataka police stepped up vigil along the border, with over 1,000 police personnel deployed.
