Parakram Diwas observed to remember Longewala Battle
Jaisalmer: Indian army celebrated India's 51 years of winning the 1971 Longewala Battle between India and Pakistan as Parakram Diwas on Monday at the military station in Jaisalmer.
A wreath laying ceremony was organised at the Longewala War Memorial where Desert Corps core commander Lt Gen Rakesh Kumar, 12 Rapid GoC Maj Gen Yogendra Pal Singh, collector Tina Dabi including other army officers, jawans, tourists, students and war veterans and villagers were present.
During the program weapons, modern equipment, tanks, cannons and other weapons were displayed. Indian army paratroopers jumped from 10,000 ft from a helicopter and stunned the audience.
They also displayed the art of balancing on a motorcycle and displayed various stunts. The Sikh regiment soldiers also performed stunts with swords. The soldiers also displayed martial arts along with Malkhamb, Kallaripattu etc. A musical extravaganza, ‘Call of the Desert’ was an added attraction. The military band played martial music infusing josh in the environment as the school children and NCC Cadets also put up their best performances.
Lt Gen Rakesh Kapoor also interacted with the Veer Naris and veterans including the ones who participated in the historic battle of Longewala. Video messages of war veterans who could not attend the function in Jaisalmer, werealso played wherein they shared their experiences of the war. At Longewala, the facility of E-Shraddhanjali, a unique kiosk wherein the general public can offer floral tributes to the war heroes at the touch of a button was also inaugurated.
