Exec, kin sign up on fake site for plots, lose 32k

Gurgaon: An assistant vice-president of an online shopping platform, who tried to register online for a lucky draw of plots in the Yamuna Expressway township, was cheated of Rs 11,000. He also asked his father-in-law to participate in the plot scheme, and the latter lost Rs 21,000 in registration fees.
The victim, Girish Singhal, told cops that he searched for “YEIDA Awasiya” on Google and got redirected to a website, where he provided his information and paid the registration fees.
His father-in-law followed the same process. “The payment went through, but I could not complete the registration form. I paid through UPI, while my father-in-law paid through net banking. However, we didn’t receive any response from the website. The next day, I sent an email to the address provided on the site about the payments, attaching screenshots and seeking clarity on the non-completion of registration,” Singhal told cops.
Days later, when Singhal checked the website, he found that the page wasn’t opening. It was then that he realised the website was dubious, and cybercriminals had cheated him and his father-in-law.
An FIR was filed at Sector 59 police station on Sunday under IPC sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation) and 420 (cheating and dishonesty).
