MADIKERI: Following complaints from villagers, the forest department has given permission to capture two jumbos which are raiding coffee plantations around Ammati-Siddapur in Virajpet taluk. The permission allows to capture two wild elephants, one in Ammathi and another around Siddapur.
Virajpet range ACF KA Nehru said they are making continuous efforts to trace the movement of the two jumbos that have already been identified for capture. Action has been taken to capture them from next week. Even recently, several people have been attacked by these two jumbos and they are receiving treatment for serious injuries.
Meanwhile, many tamed elephants in Dubare camp have been sent to Hassan and Chikkamagaluru districts.
Recently several people died due to elephant attacks in those districts. The capture operation is going on with the help of Dubare elephants. After these elephants return to Dubare, the operation to capture the two elephants in Kodagu will be taken up," said ACF Nehru. He said a proposal has been sent to the government to capture four other elephants which are creating chaos in Ammathi and Siddapur range.
Meanwhile, Thithimathi range forest officer Ashok Hunagunda said a proposal has been sent to capture three wild elephants that are entering plantation areas and severely damaging crops in his range. TNN
