
Pune News Highlights: The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) on Wednesday demanded Union Territory status for Belagavi and other disputed border areas between Karnataka and Maharashtra. The party said that it will join the proposed delegation led by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar to Belagavi to extend support to the Marathi-speaking people living there. On Tuesday, Pawar, speaking to reporters in Mumbai, had given a 24-hour ultimatum to the Karnataka government to stop the attack on vehicles from Maharashtra entering Karnataka or be “prepared to face consequences”.
In retaliation against the attack on vehicles from Maharashtra in Karnataka’s Belagavi, workers from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) on Tuesday defaced a few Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses that were parked at a parking lot near Pune’s Swargate bus stand. The incident took place after six Maharashtra vehicles were allegedly targeted by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike activists at Hirebagewadi near Belagavi early on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, A fire broke out at an agarbatti (incense stick) manufacturing factory in Pandharkar Nagar, Akurdi on Tuesday morning, officials with PCMC Fire Brigade said. As many as 400 students were vacated from a nearby school after the fire quickly began to intensify. “About 400 students and staff members from Beena English Medium School have been vacated as a precautionary measure,” said a fire officer. The factory is located near a slum and along a railway line.
A 21-year-old medical student in Pune district’s Baramati town was allegedly robbed, assaulted and stripped by three youths, who also took his nude photos and threatened to make them public, the police said on Wednesday, adding that the accused were arrested within hours of the FIR being lodged.
The incident took place between 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm on December 4 near Baramati Medical College and General Hospital, which is located near the industrial area of Baramati town, 110 km from Pune city.
According to the first information report lodged at the Baramati Taluka police station, the second-year medical student said that on Sunday night, he was walking back to his hostel after shopping at a local mall when he was intercepted by a man on a bike at a secluded location near the hospital’s oxygen generation plant. The man allegedly threatened to harm the student and stole Rs 15,000 from his pocket. Moments later, the FIR says, two more people arrived at the spot on a bike. Read more
Maharashtra Chief Minister on Tuesday approved a proposal to form a separate municipal council for Uruli Devachi and Phursungi villages by removing them from the jurisdiction of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Representatives of the villages, along with the district collector and the PMC commissioner, attended the meeting called by Eknath Shinde to discuss issues of Uruli Devachi and Phursungi on the insistence of former Sena legislator Vijay Shivtare, who had joined the Shinde faction after the party’s split. The two villages were merged with the PMC in 2017 but the residents had been demanding separation from it since then citing a lack of basic civic amenities despite being made to pay property tax. The Pimpri Chinchwad police have arrested three suspects after they fired eight rounds in the air at three different locations as they moved around in a rickshaw Tuesday evening. While no one was injured as the rounds were fired in the air, the back-to-back incidents in these areas did cause panic in the area.
The three men have been identified as Shahrukh Shahnawaz Shaikh, Farukh Shahnawaz Shaikh and Shoaib Shaikh, said the police. Read more.
A 45-year-old man died after sustaining a deep wound on his throat due to a stray nylon manja (a sharp kite string) in Daund town of Pune district on Monday afternoon, the police said. The police launched a search for the people who were flying kites in the area.
The deceased has been identified as Pannalal Yadav, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh and used to reside in the Pasalkar Vasti area of Daund town, located around 90 km from Pune. The government had banned the use of kite strings made of nylon, according to the officials. Read the full report here.
A 3.14 km double-decker viaduct constructed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha Metro) in Nagpur has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records.
It is part of a 3-layer structure with the Metro rail at the top, highway flyover at the middle level and the existing road at ground level.It was already registered as the longest double-decker viaduct in the Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records. Read more here.

Wildlife SOS and the forest department reunited a 45-day-old male leopard cub with its mother. On Saturday night, sugarcane farmers found the cub in Shiroli village under Junnar forest division in Pune district.
They informed forest department officials, who rescued the cub and brought it to the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre in Junnar, operated jointly by Wildlife SOS and the forest department. Since 2009, Wildlife SOS has reunited 100 leopard cubs with their mothers. Read more.

A fire broke out at an agarbatti (incense stick) manufacturing factory at Pandharkar Nagar in Pune’s Akurdi on Tuesday morning, fire brigade officials said.
The blaze quickly went out of control as the factory stored a considerable amount of inflammable material. It also led officials of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) fire brigade to evacuate students and staff from a school located nearby. Read More
A day after 11 gram panchayats in Akkalkot taluka of Maharashtra’s Solapur district passed resolutions to merge with Karnataka, some village panchayats have backtracked, saying they now want to stay with Maharashtra.
The change of heart apparently took place after BJP’s Akkalkot MLA Sachin Kalyanshetti held a meeting with the sarpanches of some of the gram panchayats seeking to move. “Except two gram panchayats, none want to merge with Karnataka state,” Kalyanshetti told The Indian Express on Tuesday. Read More
After facing consistent criticism for failing to reduce water leaks in the city despite introducing the ambitious 24X7 water supply project that includes plugging the leakages, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning to undertake a survey of housing societies to check the condition of their underground water tanks and recommend repairs if needed.
Contrary to the claims made by the Maharashtra state water resources department that 260 litres of water is consumed per capita everyday in the city as against 140 litres, the PMC said that 40 per cent of the water in the city is lost in leaks.
