The Common Service Centre (CSC) will open 500 cinema halls by March 2023 in partnership with October Cinemas, it said in a release on Monday.

As per a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between CSC and October Cinemas, the aim is to open 1 lakh cinema halls in rural areas, each with a seating capacity of up to 200 people.

“By the end of 2023 around 1,500 cinema halls will be operational across India. These cinema halls with a seating capacity of around 100-200 will also act as a hub of various CSC activities in rural areas,” CSC said in a release.

The CSC, a special-purpose vehicle of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has been set up as a company under the Companies Act of 1956.

It was initially started as a service centre to help people register for various government services, along with booking railway, bus, and flight tickets. With time, however, CSCs have expanded their network to provide services such as filling in passport forms and providing banking services.
