Climate, resource crisis major challenges for humans: Expert
Mysuru: Flemming Besenbacher, chairperson of UNLEASH, stated that climate and resource crisis are the two major challenges before the human race, and we need to find a solution for this before the problems become irreversible.
He was speaking at the fourth UNLEASH global innovation lab, a week-long event at Infosys in the city. “This is the time to act. We need to stop talking and start acting,” he said.
Highlighting the need for joint action by the public-the private sectors in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), he pointed out that rolling out of Covid 19 vaccine in just nine months’ time is an example of how such a collaboration can help to achieve these goals.
Warning that the human race has only one globe for survival, Besenbacher stated that challenges like climate change needs to be addressed at the earliest.
Minister of IT-BT, electronics C N Ashwath Narayan stated that finding solutions to the challenges faced by our society, especially in reaching the SDGs fixed by the UN is the top priority for all. He warned that as the country has a huge population, the challenge of addressing the resource crunch is very critical. “Today finding solutions for global challenges is very important. The solution can come from anywhere. All the innovators coming together under a single platform is important which is achieved through UNLEASH,” he said.
India is today helping the world to find a solution to various challenges. “Our Prime Minister Modi is promoting yoga as a solution to the many lifestyle challenges. Quality education is the key to reaching the SDG goals,” he said. Chintan Vaishnav, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) said AIM started building community innovation centres which are more focused on the SDGs. At the event, over 1,000 young participants from across the world and India have gathered. They worked in teams to co-create solutions anchored by a design thinking process to solve some of the world’s seven most pressing challenges like climate change, education, etc.
