Hubballi: The district police have launched the Student Police Cadet (SPC) programme in 13 rural schools to develop leadership, character and mental strength among students.
Selected students are being trained for three months under the Union government scheme. As many as 20 boys and girls were selected from each school and 522 students were trained. They were all trained for one day each week with three classes of 40 minutes each. Skilled policemen are assigned the training task in the schools.
Dharwad superintendent of police Lokesh Jagalasar told STOI that the SPC seeks to build a bridge between the police and the community by inculcating values and ethics among school students through indoor and outdoor classes and activities.
“Students from government schools of Kusugal, Karadigudda, Adaragunchi, Mummigatti, Dharwad, Anchageri, Kuruvinakoppa, Alanavar, Gudisagar, Annigeri, Saunshi, Gudageri and Government High School, Navodaya High School Kyarakoppa and Police Children Residential School, Dharwad are undergoing training,” he added.
“It’s a short-term training for students on the lines of NCC. It mainly focuses on class 8 and 9 students. Students will be trained on various topics including development, emotional and mental fitness, awareness of civic responsibilities, introduction to police department and building an addiction free society. Overall, the objective of the project is to build a strong nation,” he said.
Lokesh said that for the first time the district police have been given the responsibility implementing the scheme in select schools. The scheme will benefit students who are unable to get admission in NCC. Police constable or head constable level personnel and drill instructors are assigned for training. Self-defence training for girls will be given, he said.
