DALTONGANJ: A 27-year-old man was mistaken for a wild boar and shot at by unidentified men in the Charturwa forests under Chainpur police station limits in Palamu district on November 30, police said.
The injured man, identified as Israfil Ansari, is a native of Bairma village adjacent to the forests, was admitted to Medinirai Medical College and Hospital by his family members and neighbours hours later.
Uday Kumar Gupta, the officer in-charge of Chainpur police station, said Ansari took the hit of a pellet, which was fired from a muzzleloader, in his left thigh and began bleeding profusely.
“He had ventured into the forests to look for his missing ox on Wednesday morning when the incident occurred. Ansari alleged that a minimum of four identified men had ventured into the jungles to hunt for wild boars and mistook him for the animal and fired when Ansari had bent to look for his ox,” Gupta said, quoting Ansari’s statement to the police.
Speaking to reporters at the hospital on Thursday, Ansari said he did not lose his composure after being injured and rang up his father Hadis Ansari, who was also in the forest to look for the ox but had gone in a different direction. “My father came up to me and when he saw me bleeding, he summoned other residents of the village. Together, they brought me here,” Ansari said at the hospital.
Palamu civil surgeon Dr Vijay Kumar Singh said X-rays on Ansari did not reveal the presence of any metallic object in his thigh. Dr Amit Vikram, surgeon on duty at MMCH who attended to Ansari, said he was stable and responding to the treatments. “The pellet which injured the patient’s left thigh came out on its own as X-ray scans did not reveal any metals in the thigh,” he added.
Gupta said that based on Ansari’s statement, an FIR was lodged against unknown persons and investigations into the incident have begun.
