7 held in tenant verification drive at Tivim

Panaji: Colvale police, during a tenant verification drive at Auchit Vaddo, Tivim, on Saturday, rounded up at least 50 persons and arrested seven.
The 50 individuals were asked to report to the police station as they had not filled their tenant verification forms. Seven were arrested under provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure for failing to produce identity documents and also because their movements in the area were found to be suspicious.
Police said they have reported the arrested persons to the Mapusa sub-divisional magistrate for further action.
During the course of Saturday’s drive, which saw police personnel going from house to house to check if tenant verification procedures had been complied with, cases were registered under relevant provisions of the IPC against house owners who had, in violation of the SDM’s orders, offered accommodation to tenants without getting their antecedents verified.
Such drives will be randomly conducted in other areas within the Mapusa SDM’s jurisdiction, police said.
