Residents of JMC-H areas want open dumping to end
Jaipur: After Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) Greater decided to stop open dumping under its jurisdiction, residents and a section of councillors of JMC Heritage feel that the new municipality of the city should take a similar steps as open dumping grounds are a perennial problem within the wall city and its adjacent areas.
“We have an open dump yard right front of my house adjacent to the gate of my society. It is frustrating for us to live in our house with windows open because of its stink. Going out for a walk through this gate is also a nightmare. To bypass this gate, we had to go around and take the gate on the other side of our society,” said Prakash Mirchandani, a resident of Adarsh Nagar.
Councillors of JMC heritage claimed that open dumping yards is a major problem in areas under the jurisdiction of JMC Heritage. The problem is felt more in these areas because these are old parts of the city and roads are narrow and the dump yards cover almost the whole portion of a road.
“As a councillor I had tried to clean the dump yards on several occasion in the past. But residents again dump their garbage at the same spot. Until and unless the municipality is strict on this and start imposing fine it would be impossible to put a curb on local residents,” said Prakash Chandra Sharma, the councillor of ward 88.
On Tuesday the executive committee of JMC Greater has decided to make areas under their city open-dustbin free. It was decided in the meeting that all open dustbin or dump yards should be removed as soon as possible. Residents and councillors of JMC Heritage now demands such a movement under the jurisdiction of the heritage corporation also.
“There are notices all around stating that area is under camera surveillance and any body throwing garbage on the road is liable to pay fine. But, still, there are people who dump garbage on the roads and there’s no action against them. Although the garbage picking vans are regular the drivers refuse to clean the garbage from these dumping yards stating that this is not their job,” said Dharmendra Tilwani, a resident of Sindh Colony.
JMC Heritage administration officials claimed that they regularly involve sweepers to clean the open dumping yards and often slaps fine against residents for throwing garbage and against the sweepers also for not doing their duties properly.
“Keeping city clean is a continuous process and you have to keep a strict vigil on both – who are throwing garbage and who are responsible to clean the garbage. The question of stopping open garbage dumps does not arise because these are not dumping yards bot a section of residents are making the spots dumping yards by throwing garbage. We are keeping a strict vigil,” said, deputy mayor of JMC Heritage Aslam Farooqui.
